The legendary AMG biturbo V8 heart beats even stronger in the S 63 E PERFORMANCE. While part of a hybrid system, the gas engine alone can generate a breathtaking 604 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. Twin-scroll turbos with low-friction bearings are located in the engine's "hot V" for massive, virtually-lag-free boost. Zero to 60 mph can occur in just 3.0 seconds. Yet even with its advanced technologies, each engine is still hand-built and signed by its own craftsman.
A 187-hp "permanently excited synchronous motor" (PSM) is mounted at the rear axle, part of an Electric Drive Unit that also includes a two-speed gearbox. Able to apply its torque instantly at full strength, its output can enhance takeoffs and passing, and even be sent toward the front wheels to enhance handling on a variety of surfaces. Together, the biturbo V8 and electric motor have a combined output of 791 hp and 1,055 lb-ft of torque.
The rear-mounted Electric Drive Unit integrates the electric motor with an automated two-speed gearbox that offers the e-motor's benefits over a wider range of speeds. The EDU can also provide the benefits of a virtual limited-slip differential, by precisely apportioning the torque to each wheel based on changing demands as you corner, accelerate and brake. It can also adapt to road-surface friction, lateral forces and other conditions in real time, for enhanced cornering and feedback.
A fuel-saving ECO Start/Stop system automatically shuts off the engine at stoplights and other idle situations. As soon as the driver lifts off the brake, the engine instantly restarts, for immediate acceleration response. The ECO Start/Stop system can also be shut off by the driver at any time.
For the first time on an AMG S-Class, the iconic Star has moved to the center of the AMG vertical-bar grille. On the hood is the AMG "Affalterbach" crest. The deep front apron, sculpted side sills and rear bumper all add an aggressively aerodynamic edge to the flowing, muscle-toned S-Class body.
A range of AMG® wheel options sized 20 or 21 inches includes a variety of designs in silver, black or polished finishes, and cast or forged-alloy construction. All the wheels are staggered, with wider rear tires to enhance launch grip while the front tires are optimized for crisp steering feedback.
Offering both front- and rear-seat passengers sweeping skyward views, this fully functional glass sunroof features a front panel that can either tilt up for ventilation or slide over the rear panel for an open-air feeling. Dual interior power shades with controls allow the driver and each rear passenger to adjust the amount of sunlight entering the cabin.
The AMG Performance steering wheel, available in three finishes, keeps control of countless settings close at hand: Capacitive switches on the twin spokes. Electronic gear selection, plus shift paddles. And buttons for key performance settings that integrate color function displays.
In S-Class fashion, the rear cabin offers unrivaled comfort. Spacious yet highly detailed, rear seating options range from massage and neck warming to twin seats divided by a console with folding tables and an available refrigerated compartment.
The Burmester® 3D system pairs innovations in mobile audio with legendary quality. A Digitial Signal Processing amp can output 710 total watts to deliver a natural sound spectrum in any music genre. A total of 15 speakers includes 3D surround speakers, exquisitely drilled metal speaker grilles, and body-integrated FrontBass subwoofers. Along with preset listening modes, Sound Personalization can tailor settings to your individual tastes.
Near-Field Communication (NFC) technology allows wireless charging of a compatible phone or other device that supports the Qi standard. An inductive charging tray in the front-cabin console lets you charge your device's battery while you drive without plugging it in.
All new Mercedes-Benz vehicles are protected by our New Vehicle Limited Warranty, covering defects in material or workmanship for 48-months or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. For added protection, the Mercedes-Benz Extended Limited Warranty offers continued peace of mind with prolonged coverage tailored to your needs.
At most driving speeds, radar technology can help sense when a vehicle enters the blind-spot area on either side of you, and alert you by illuminating an icon in the appropriate side mirror. If you activate a turn signal while a vehicle is detected, it can sound a warning tone and flash the mirror icon. And if you begin to change lanes, advanced active technology can help guide the car back by selectively braking individual wheels.
Using the technology of Blind Spot Assist after you park, Exit Warning Assist can watch for vehicles, cyclists or pedestrians that could be at risk if the door is opened.
With technology to monitor ordinary road markings above a certain driving speed, Active Lane Keeping Assist can help detect unintended drifting off-course, and alert you by vibrating the steering wheel. If you continue to drift, it can selectively brake individual wheels to help guide the car back. Enhancements help it alert you to overtaking vehicles, vehicles you'd need to overtake if you change lanes, and even traffic in the adjacent lane or along the road edge for safer evasive moves.
When cruising with DISTRONIC® engaged, this innovation can allow the driver to execute a lane change simply by activating a turn signal with a tap of the lever. The system is designed to sense when you're traveling on a multilane highway, and whether the area across the dashed lane marking is clear for a lane-change, then precisely steer into the adjacent lane. Enhancements can lengthen the system's search phase for an opening, and change lanes more deftly.
