The 9-speed transmission is sporty, smooth and efficient. It teams with a 2-speed transfer case to offer one of the industry's widest gear spans. The driving modes of DYNAMIC SELECT let you fine-tune the G's performance.

Three lockable differentials.

As you make your way off-road, three sequentially lockable differentials offer increasingly masterful capability. Each differential can be locked in sequence (center, rear, then front) via a set of buttons on the dash, to help maintain the ideal balance of torque and traction for the situation.

ECO Start/Stop system.

An ECO Start/Stop system automatically shuts off the engine at stoplights and other idle situations, to save fuel and reduce emissions. As soon as the driver lifts off the brake, the engine instantly restarts, for immediate acceleration response. The ECO Start/Stop system can also be shut off by the driver at any time.

Direct Injection and multispark ignition.

Advanced piezoelectric fuel injectors spray fuel directly into each cylinder with exceptionally precise metering, ultrafine atomization and incredibly quick on/off switching speed. Based on the immediate, individual needs of each cylinder's combustion cycle, they can supply the ideal fuel spray at high pressure and with millisecond speed. Rapid-multispark ignition can fire the fuel mixture multiple times in a single cycle, for stronger and cleaner performance.

“Hot inside V8” turbocharger configuration.

For better performance and packaging, the V8's twin turbos are placed inside the "V" of the engine. The layout sends the compressed charge from each turbo to its bank of cylinders via an extremely short path, with near-zero pressure loss or turbo lag. The high-pressure turbos spool up quickly to provide up to 14.5 psi of boost. The setup is also highly efficient from intake to exhaust, with liquid-cooled intercoolers and close-mounted catalysts that reach peak efficiency in seconds.

Permanent all-wheel drive with 2-speed transfer case.

The G-Class features all-wheel drive equipped with a 2-speed transfer case and an extraordinary three lockable differentials, all to help drivers tackle a variety of terrains and conditions. With its 9-speed automatic transmission and two transfer-case ranges, the G-Class offers one of the widest spans of gear ratios of any SUV. So whether you're crawling down a steep hill or cruising on the highway, there's an optimum gear for the situation.

A G-Class looks out for its occupants with a suite of safety advancements. Standard driver assists include Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC cruise control, and Speed Limit Assist.

Mercedes-Benz Emergency Call.

If an air bag deploys, your car can automatically initiate a call to Mercedes-Benz Emergency Services, transmitting your GPS-determined location and helpful vehicle information on your behalf. Trained experts are on call 24/7 to help summon local emergency responders to your location. You can also press the SOS button in the vehicle anytime you need emergency assistance, or see someone else who does. This vital service is provided for as long as you own the vehicle, no matter who's driving.

Rearview camera.

For a better view of what's behind your vehicle when reversing, a high-resolution camera can display a live view on the central in-dash screen. If it detects wheelspin, severe understeer (plowing), or oversteer (fishtailing), ESP^® can brake individual wheels and reduce engine power to help bring the vehicle under control.

Seat belt technology.

Provided at all five seats, 3-point seat belts are arguably our most important passive safety feature. If a collision exceeds a preset threshold, Emergency Tensioning Devices (ETDs) instantly remove slack from the front and rear outboard seat belts. Belt force limiters allow a slight amount of give in the ETD-equipped seat belts, to reduce the peak seat-belt forces on the occupant.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System.

The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) can automatically detect a substantial loss of tire pressure in any wheel and alert the driver via a warning message in the multifunction display. The advanced TPMS can also display the numeric tire pressure for each mounted wheel.
